11. The Mastermind

When the two sentinels had gone, Chris said to Sigourney, “There’s something I need to do. You should go back to bed. You’ll be okay here with Chen in charge.” It was not a question, but a statement, and Sigourney looked far from happy about it.

She had sat down on Chris’s bed with a thump, looking bone-tired, a far sight from the vibrant woman who had whirled and whooped around the roaring bonfire last night.

“But you’re the only one I like taking care of me,” she said, a slight tremble in her husky voice betraying her anxiety. She sounded almost petulant, like an overtired child, an effect which was exacerbated when she rubbed her eyes wearily. “Don’t go.”

“I have to.”

“Why?”

“Where?” I said more forcefully.

“None of your business,” he said bluntly, already walking towards the door.

I stepped in front of it, blocking his way. “Those sentinels were right about one thing. You need help. You know you need help, or why else did you come to my place earlier?

I hoped he might say he had come to apologise for being so rude the previous night, but he said nothing. He just looked at me expectantly, like he was waiting for me to give up and move out of his way.

“Seriously?” I said. “Did you even think about asking Sigourney for her help or do you have too much pride for that?”

On the bed, Sigourney’s head had been drooping. It jerked back up at my words. “You know my gift doesn’t work like that,” she said. “My focus must stay on the task they sent me here for. I can only do one thing at a time these days. It’s all so tiring.” She rubbed her eyes again.

A pleading note came into my voice. “Can’t you take a short break from the other job? If you concentrated on this for a day or so, you might have a revelation. I mean, you must believe Chris is innocent or you wouldn’t have helped him today.”

Her brows furrowed and she looked at me as if she was tired of trying to make people understand how things worked.

She said in a dull voice, “If you want me to specifically see who stole the stake, or who used it to kill that werewolf, you’re hoping for a miracle. That kind of vision rarely comes on command. They only come as they want to and they never tell you the whole truth anyway.” She laughed bitterly. “It would require me to go to where he died, speak to the people that he knew, be in the places he spent his last days… And even that is just a shot in the dark.”

“But you could try?” I insisted.

“Maybe,” she said reluctantly. “Maybe tonight, after it gets dark.”

“I don’t have that long,” said Chris impatiently.

It would be hours until sunset.

A thought occurred to me and I took an excited step forward. “Sigourney, maybe you can help Chris find his lost memory. You don’t have to go out for that.
